Can I Take a Roll on Back on Virgin Economy

It's plane food that's far from plain.

Say goodbye to beige plastic packaging and tiny packets of pretzels, Virgin Australia's new in-flight food offerings are luxe to the max.

Virgin Australia has given its in-flight menu offerings an epic post-pandemic glow up, with a brand new business class menu and upgraded economy class food options that will have even the most difficult-to-please foodie swooning.

On top of dropping the 'free snack' element from its ticket prices and putting a new 'buy onboard' model in place for economy passengers, there's also a lush new gourmet business class menu to savour.

What is the new business class menu?

The new Virgin Australia business class menu includes hot meals, healthy salads and Australian classics served on real tableware like crockery, glassware and cutlery.

It will rotate on a bi-monthly basis, and the menu is all-inclusive of premium Aussie wines, beer, soft drinks and spirits.

Guests will be able to choose from two different menu choices on every flight, with choices that suitable for both the time of day and the length of the flight.

Why did Virgin change their in-flight menu?

One of the big reasons for the change to Virgin Australia's menu is new research, which shows that domestic travellers prefer being able to choose their own food and beverages from a 'buy onboard' model, rather than receiving a pre-chosen snack.

What is on the new economy class menu?

To begin with, the economy class food offerings will be comprised of the most popular snacks and beverage options, like cheese and crackers, muffins, Kettle potato chips, beer, spirits and Australian wines.

What about people who booked tickets prior to the change?

All fares that were booked prior to March 25th can still request a free snack.

How will the new menu affect ticket prices?

The revamped menu offering is part of the airline's commitment to offering more affordable, better value airfares. By removing the 'free snack' element from the ticket price and offering a 'buy onboard' option, they'll be able to offer more competitive airfares.

All the recent changes — including the 20% cut to their business class airfares back in November 2020 — are part of their efforts to transform the brand into a mid-market carrier, with lower airfares that make travel more accessible and affordable for everyone.
